Purpose of the Pyramids and the Mystery of What They Were Really For?

More than 4,500 years after the Great Pyramid was built, its purpose is still debated beyond its accepted role as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu.

Some stretch the evidence, while others start with genuine mysteries surrounding the monument.

So what exactly was the Great Pyramid built to do?

Khufu Left More Than His Name Behind Purpose of the Pyramids Khufu

Some alternative theories questioned his connection to the Great Pyramid, particularly the painted markings above the King’s Chamber.

But other evidence points to Khufu.

A Fourth Dynasty workers settlement and quarry have been uncovered at Giza, while the Diary of Merer describes crews transporting limestone to Khufu’s pyramid complex.

“Merer described working with his ‘za’ to bring materials to Giza. They must have arrived by boat.”– Ancient Egypt Research Associates

The diary doesn’t explain how every block was raised or why every chamber was built, but it does place workers moving stone to Khufu’s project during his reign.Purpose of the Pyramids khufu writings 2

Combined with the quarry, workers’ settlement, inscriptions, and surrounding complex, the evidence for Khufu is strong.

It doesn’t explain the pyramid’s full purpose, but removing him from the story creates more problems than it solves.

A Tomb Built Around Transformation

The Great Pyramid followed generations of royal architecture, from Djoser’s Step Pyramid through Sneferu’s experiments at Meidum and Dahshur.

Its surrounding temples, causeways, smaller pyramids, and cemeteries also tied it closely to royal death. Purpose of the Pyramids chamber

But a tomb wasn’t simply a resting place.

Egyptian royal death involved resurrection, transformation, and celestial travel, ideas later expressed in the Pyramid Texts.

“Raise thyself up, N. Unite thy bones, collect thy limbs. The apertures of the heavenly windows are open for thee. Broad are thy steps of light.”– The Pyramid Texts

But What If The Living Made the AfterLife Journey?

What if the pyramid wasn’t only meant to transform the dead king, but also the living? Purpose of the Pyramids kings chamber

Manly P. Hall proposed that initiates entered the Great Pyramid and underwent a symbolic death and rebirth.

In his version, the candidate eventually reached the King’s Chamber and entered the granite coffer.

“In the King’s Chamber was enacted the drama of the ‘second death.’ Here the candidate was buried in the great coffer. During the time that his body was in the coffer his soul was supposed to wander through the realms of the dead.”– Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teachings of All Ages

Hall had no 4th Dynasty text describing such a ceremony, so his account remains an esoteric interpretation rather than established history.

Without artificial light, the King’s Chamber is dark and isolated, while the granite room resonates and the coffer produces a noticeable tone when struck.

Combined with chanting and ritual expectation, the environment could’ve created a powerful experience. Hall imagined something even more dramatic. Purpose of the Pyramids kings chamber astral projection

“This room was a doorway between the material world and the transcendental spheres. The soul soared through the celestial realms.”– Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teaching Of All Ages

Hall also traced the Egyptian pyramid tradition back to Atlantis.

“Such is the origin of the pyramids of Egypt, Mexico, and Central America.” – Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teaching Of All Ages

There’s no evidence that Khufu’s priests performed Hall’s ritual, but the broader possibility that some chambers were designed to shape ritual experience is harder to dismiss.

What Don Juan Said About Pyramids In General

Carlos Castaneda offered another unusual interpretation of pyramids through the teachings of Don Juan Matus.

Although Don Juan was discussing the pyramids of ancient Mexico rather than Giza, he described some as places built specifically to alter awareness. Purpose of the Pyramids don juan matus

“Some of the pyramids were gigantic non-doings. They were places for warriors to dream and exercise their second attention.”- Carlos Castaneda, The Eagle’s Gift

Within Castaneda’s system, the second attention means perception beyond ordinary awareness.

There’s no historical link to Egypt, but this is the 2nd esoteric idea we’ve come face to face suggesting pyramids could’ve been used to produce altered states of awareness.

The Pyramid and the Heavenly SkiesPurpose of the Pyramids pyramids lining up with orion

The Great Pyramid’s relationship with the sky begins with its orientation.

Its sides face the cardinal directions with remarkable accuracy, raising the question of how Old Kingdom surveyors achieved it.

Researcher Glen Dash has examined several possibilities involving observations of the sun and stars.

“The builders of the Great Pyramid of Khufu aligned the huge monument to true north within six minutes of arc. How they managed that has long been debated.”– Glen Dash

Dash showed that relatively simple astronomical methods could produce impressive accuracy, meaning the alignment doesn’t require lost technology.Purpose of the Pyramids Orions Belt

Researchers have proposed connections with circumpolar stars, Sirius, and Orion, all important within Egyptian celestial religion.

Robert Bauval took the idea farther with the Orion Correlation Theory, arguing that the 3 main Giza pyramids reflect the three stars of Orion’s Belt.

“The dominant stars of this cult were those of the constellation of Orion. Orion was thus seen as the celestial representation of Osiris.”– Robert Bauval

The religious importance of Orion is well established.

The harder part is proving that the entire Giza plateau was deliberately laid out as an exact map of Orion’s Belt, particularly when the theory is pushed back toward roughly 10,500 BC.

The sky was clearly part of the Egyptian worldview and exactly how literally it was written into Giza remains up for debate.

Mathematics Written in StonePurpose of the Pyramids mathematics

The Great Pyramid has become a playground for mathematical theories.

Researchers have identified relationships involving pi, the golden ratio, Earth’s dimensions, and astronomical cycles.

Using commonly accepted dimensions, relationships between the pyramid’s height and perimeter approximate pi, while other proportions approach the golden ratio.

Christopher Bartlett examined the mathematical evidence and landed in an interesting middle ground.Purpose of the Pyramids Pi golden ratio

“The empirical evidence repeatedly reveals the presence of the golden ratio. Yet there doesn’t seem to be any good reason to conclude it was intended.” – Christopher Bartlett

That’s where the problem lies.

A monument this large offers countless measurements and possible patterns.

Its precision shows that geometry mattered, but ratios resembling pi or the golden ratio may have emerged from practical building methods rather than deliberate encoding.

When the Pyramid Starts to Hum

Sound takes the mystery in another direction because the underlying effect is easy to notice.Purpose of the Pyramids chris dunn resonator

The King’s Chamber resonates, while the granite coffer produces a strong tone when struck.

Engineer Christopher Dunn turned those properties into one of the most ambitious alternative theories about Giza.

He proposed that the Great Pyramid was a machine using vibration and resonance as part of an energy system.

In his reconstruction, equipment once occupied the Grand Gallery.

“Harmonic resonators were housed in these slots and were oriented vertically toward the ceiling. I had also theorized that there was a hydrogen explosion.”

“The specific design and utility of the Grand Gallery was to transfer the energy. This sound was then focused into the granite resonating cavity.”– Christopher Dunn

Dunn’s theory didn’t stop with sound.Purpose of the Pyramids electric power plant

He proposed that vibration inside the pyramid could’ve been converted into electricity through the quartz in the King’s Chamber granite.

In his model, mechanical stress on the quartz produced an electrical charge through the piezoelectric effect.

Dunn believed the Grand Gallery helped tune and transfer that vibration into the King’s Chamber, effectively turning the pyramid into a geomechanical power plant.

Water Of Life

Another theory involves water.

Edward Kunkel and John Cadman proposed that parts of the pyramid formed a hydraulic system, with Cadman even building working pump models. Purpose of the Pyramids hydraulic system

“It sure is a good pump. It’s a great pump.”– John Cadman

Water clearly played a role at Giza, with ancient Nile branches bringing stone and supplies closer to the site.

Water helped build the pyramid, but whether it also made the pyramid work is another question.

Maybe We’re Asking the Wrong Question

The Great Pyramid doesn’t have to fit neatly into one shoe box.

The evidence strongly connects it with Khufu and Egyptian funerary religion, but astronomy, geometry, sound, ritual, and celestial beliefs may have all played a part.

That doesn’t prove the more extreme theories, but it leaves room for purposes we still don’t fully understand.
