The Socorro UFO Sighting of 1964: The Encounter That Baffled the U.S. Air Force

On April 24, 1964, police officer Lonnie Zamora was pursuing a speeding vehicle near Socorro, New Mexico, when a deafening roar interrupted his patrol.

Investigating what he believed might be an explosion, Zamora encountered something extraordinary in a secluded desert ravine.

What followed became one of America’s most investigated UFO incidents, involving mysterious figures and strange ground markings.

Even the U.S. Air Force couldn’t explain what Zamora witnessed.

A Strange Object in the Desert

At approximately 5:45 p.m., Zamora heard a roaring noise and spotted a bluish-orange flame descending behind a nearby hill.

Abandoning his pursuit, he drove toward the disturbance.Socorro UFO Sighting

From a distance, he noticed what initially appeared to be an overturned automobile.

Approaching closer, he realized the object was oval-shaped, whitish metallic in appearance, and apparently supported by legs.

Nearby stood two small figures wearing white coveralls.

In his written account of the encounter, Zamora recalled:

“One of these persons seemed to turn and look straight at my car and seemed startled.”- Officer Lonnie Zamora, April 1964 witness statement, preserved in the Project Blue Book investigation files.

Moments later, the object emitted another tremendous roar.

Flames appeared beneath it as it rose from the ground.

Fearing an explosion, Zamora fled toward his patrol car and took cover.

When he looked again, the object was moving away silently across the desert.

The entire encounter lasted only minutes.

Physical Evidence at the Landing Site

What distinguished the Socorro incident from countless other UFO reports was the evidence investigators encountered afterward.

New Mexico State Police Sergeant Sam Chavez arrived shortly after Zamora requested assistance.Socorro UFO Sighting discovery

Investigators documented four depressions in the ground, patches of burned vegetation, and other unusual markings near the reported landing location.

An FBI report described the impressions:

“These depressions appeared regular in shape, approximately sixteen by six inches rectangular.” – FBI Special Agent D. Arthur Byrnes Jr., official FBI investigative report, May 8, 1964.

Unfortunately not one numb skull took a picture of this event.

However, laboratory testing failed to identify unusual propellant residue or other material establishing the object’s identity.

The physical traces were documented, but their connection to an unknown aircraft remained unproven.

The Air Force Investigation

The incident attracted the attention of Project Blue Book, the U.S. Air Force’s official UFO investigation program.

Astronomer J. Allen Hynek, a scientific consultant to the project, examined the case and interviewed those involved.Socorro UFO Sighting case file

In correspondence with astronomer Donald Menzel, Hynek expressed his difficulty accepting conventional explanations:

“I wish I could substantiate the idea that it was a hoax or a hallucination. Unfortunately, I cannot.” – Dr. J. Allen Hynek, correspondence with astronomer Donald Menzel, 1964.

Investigators considered experimental aircraft, including possible lunar landing vehicle prototypes.

Nevertheless, they could not establish that any such equipment had operated at the location.

The official Project Blue Book record ultimately stated:

“Case carried as UNIDENTIFIED pending additional data.”– U.S. Air Force, Project Blue Book, Project 10073 Record Card, Socorro incident, April 24, 1964.

The conclusion did not establish an extraterrestrial explanation.

It meant investigators had failed to identify the reported object.

Skeptics have subsequently proposed elaborate hoaxes and experimental equipment, but no explanation has achieved universal acceptance.

The Mystery That Still Haunts Socorro

More than sixty years later, the Socorro incident remains an intriguing chapter in UFO history.

An experienced police officer reported an extraordinary encounter, investigators documented physical traces, and the Air Force closed its investigation without identifying the object.

Whatever Lonnie Zamora witnessed in the New Mexico desert that afternoon remains uncertain.
