The Kecksburg Acorn and the Object the Army Took Away
On December 9, 1965, a fireball blazed across six states and southern Ontario.
In Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, people watched it come down in the woods, and within hours soldiers had sealed off the area.
The Air Force said it found nothing.
So why did locals see a covered object hauled out on a flatbed truck, and where did the records go?
The Fireball That Came Down in Murphy’s Hollow
Brothers Ray and Robb Landy were riding their bikes when the object glided just above the treetops.
Three miles away, Randy Overly heard a deep hiss as it passed no higher than 200 feet.
Nevin and Nadine Kalp watched a ball of fire plunge into a wooded ravine half a mile from their farm.
State troopers arrived within minutes, with volunteer firefighters close behind.
Fireman Jim Mayes spotted bright blue lights flashing in the ravine, and fellow volunteer James Romansky said his search team found the object itself.

He said it looked like a giant acorn with no wings or engines, ringed at the base by markings like Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Moments later, two men came through the trees and ordered the firemen out.
Soldiers in the Woods and a Truck in the Night
Back at the fire hall, soldiers were everywhere, and some onlookers say armed guards turned them away at gunpoint.
Soldiers commandeered Lillian Hayes’s nearby farmhouse and phone.
Bill Weaver watched men in moon suits carry a five-foot box into the hollow.
Later that night, a flatbed truck rolled out with something big under a tarp.
10 year old John Hays guessed it was the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.

A local paper soon reported that searchers had failed to find any object, and Project Blue Book filed the case as a meteor.
Even in Kecksburg, opinions split like a card deck.
Ed Myers, the town’s fire chief in 1965, has long insisted nothing crashed in those woods at all.
The Explanations That Keep Falling Apart
Astronomers called the fireball a meteor that ended its run near Lake Erie, but a meteor doesn’t explain an object on the ground or a tarp-covered truck.
Witnesses also describe it changing direction and slowing sharply near Kecksburg, as if gliding in for a landing.

Skeptics later blamed Kosmos 96, a failed Soviet probe, until NASA’s own tracking data showed it came down over Canada hours earlier.
Other ideas, from an American spy capsule to a secret Nazi device called Die Glocke, have no documentation behind them, and researcher Stan Gordon keeps every door open.

NASA and the Files That Vanished
In 2005, NASA finally admitted its experts had examined fragments from Kecksburg in the 1960s and identified them as Soviet.
The catch was that the records proving it, part of what NASA called its fragology files, had been listed as missing since 1987.

Journalist Leslie Kean sued NASA for them, and in 2007 a judge pushed the agency into a fresh search.
A NASA official testified that two boxes of records were missing, and the search ended in 2009 without cracking the case.

In 2021, the National Archives said it had no record of ever receiving the missing boxes.
And the Air Force radar squadron witnesses tied to the recovery logged nothing at all for December 9, 1965.
The Acorn Still Standing Guard in Kecksburg
Today a full-size acorn replica stands near the Kecksburg fire station, a monument to an object nobody can officially prove was ever there.
Whatever came down in Murphy’s Hollow left behind dozens of witnesses and a hole in the government’s files.
That hole may be the loudest clue of all.
